Bloemfontein’s Stevo Kühn, founder of Urban Brew Coffee, is heading for Milan – where he will be taking part in a world barista competition from 23 to 26 October.
Kühn is a certified barista trainer and owner of his own coffee shop.
His career journey with coffee began in 2015, although he says coffee has always played a huge role in his life.
“The competition format will be pretty intense,” Kühn says.
“Competitors get 15 minutes to prepare 12 drinks for some of the most respected coffee professionals in the world.”
Each competitor will prepare four espressos, four milk beverages and four signature drinks.
“Four sensory judges will be evaluating the sensory aspects of the coffee, while the competitor will share information about the coffee and a story connection. During this time a technical judge wil also evaluate the workflow and technical aspects of the preparation of the drinks,” he explains.
“It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of coffee farmers and producers and how it translates to the flavour we get in the cup.”
Indeed, what a wonderful opportunity for a local barista to showcase the good quality coffee that coffee connoisseurs can enjoy in Bloemfontein every day.
