Bloemfontein hosts moving holiday performance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’

Two shows of the Christmas-focused oratorio Messiah by George Frideric Handel, will be performed in Bloemfontein this weekend.

Heinrich Lategan’s artistic production company HL Music and local choir cantando@bloem will bring Handel’s joyous and uplifting Christmas production to stage in the Dutch Reformed Church Berg-en-Dal.

Featuring first-rate soloists, a professional orchestra, and the powerful voices of cantando@bloem, the performance will evoke the wonder of the Christmas story through Handel’s timeless music.

The evening will include iconic solo numbers like “Comfort ye, my people,” “Every valley shall be exalted” and “I know that my Redeemer liveth,” as well as beloved choruses such as “And the glory of the Lord,” “Hallelujah,” and “Worthy is the Lamb,” offering a meaningful and memorable experience for all.

Focusing on the Christmas portion of Messiah, this concert provides an accessible and intimate experience of Handel’s masterwork. It is ideal for classical music lovers, church music enthusiasts, and anyone captivated by the Biblical narrative of Christ’s birth. With a run-time of approximately two hours, including a 20-minute interval, this performance offers both new and seasoned concertgoers a memorable musical journey.

The first show is on Saturday, 7 December, at 19:00; the Sunday show will be at 15:00. Tickets cost R120; and R80 for children, students, and pensioners.
