An initiative that is set to advance the three-stream model of empowering learners with future-ready skills, developed by the Department of Basic Education, was recently held in Roodepoort, Gauteng.

The Kagiso Trust, in partnership with the Sasol Foundation, hosted the sixth Provincial Technical Schools Skills Competition themed “Trades are the Future Skills” in September.

The top learners and educators in the Free State then advanced to represent the province at the National Skills Competition from 26 to 28 September at the Artisan Training Institute (ATI) in Roodepoort.

Paul Spies, a teacher at the Hoërskool Sand du Plessis, came second in the national competition in the category for Engineering Graphics and Design. André Fouche of the Louis Botha Technical High School (THS) placed second in Carpentry.

This initiative highlights the importance of creating pathways that foster technical skills and equip learners with the tools to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

The Free State team, comprising 16 learners, took part in eight categories and were accompanied by teachers and members of the Department of Basic Education.
