Lovers of classical music are invited to listen to the Odeion School of Music (OSM) Camerata performing Concerto Grosso No. 4 andStabat MaterSunday, 21 April, at the Anglican Cathedral.
Anmari van der Westhuizen is the conductor with soloists Ilze van Staden (soprano) and Teresa de Wit (mezzo-soprano).
The main work of the concert is theStabat Mater by Giovanni Pergolesi. This is one of Pergolesi’s most celebrated sacred works, gaining popularity after the composer’s death.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau showed appreciation for the work, praising the opening movement as “the most perfect and touching duet to come from the pen of any composer”.
The liturgical use of the 13th-century poem “Stabat mater dolorosa” has varied over the centuries, and it has been set in the prevailing styles of every era.
Pergolesi creates an amazing variety of sounds and moods from this very formal text and his quite restrained forces Z two solo voices, strings and, in this edition, an organ continuo.
The concert will open with the evergreen Concerto Grosso Opus 6 No. 4by Arcangeli Correli.
The movements follow the layout of another type of Baroque instrumental music, the four movements of the church sonata: slow-fast-slow-fast.
The concert starts at 16:00 at the Anglican Cathedral. Entry is free.
