A new theatre production aimed at young audiences is set to captivate and enchant viewers with a heart-warming story about Ziya, a young girl who has trouble waking up, even for her own birthday party.
How to W.U.Z.zzz will premiere at the Scaena Rehearsal Room from Thursday (25/05) untill 27 May and promises to be a visually stunning, highly entertaining, and emotionally engaging experience for all ages.
The play follows the adventures of Ziya’s loving parents who desperately try to find out how to wake her up: from a thrilling trip to the aquarium where a giant octopus nearly gobbles them up, to hiring a high-tech tickle-robot that starts to malfunction. A ride on the Ferris wheel at the show, creepy-crawly spiders, a television talk show, flying kites, calling in the fire brigade – will any of these things wake up Ziya?
The directing team, Marijda Kamper and Walter Strydom are thrilled to be back creating theatrical experiences for young people. “It is a unique and magical production that will resonate with young audiences,” Kamper explains. “We are excited to bring this enchanting story to life on stage.” Acclaimed theatre artists with several award-winning shows behind their names, both Kamper and Strydom started their careers creating and performing in theatre for young audiences.
“The power of theatre for young audiences shouldn’t be underestimated. Our play deals with important themes such as friendship, isolation, and loneliness, which are all too relevant in today’s world, especially after the isolation we all endured during the lockdown,” Strydom said.
They hope that the play will inspire young people to connect, reach out to those in need, and find creative ways to overcome their unique struggles.
Amira van Biljon, a Drama honours student from the University of the Free State, specialising in theatre for young audiences, is the assistant director.
With music and original choreography How to W.U.Z.zzz promises to be a theatrical experience that audiences of all ages will never forget.
