Prepare for an evening of ghostly giggles and otherworldly charm as the students of the University of the Free State’s (UFS) department of Drama and Theatre Arts presents Noël Coward’s classic supernatural comedy, Blithe Spirit.
The play by third-year drama students will open on 4 June at the Wynand Mouton Theatre on the main campus of the UFS.
This spirited production promises sharp wit, elegant chaos, and a hauntingly good time.
Initially written in 1941, Blithe Spirit follows the story of socialite and novelist Charles Condomine, whose attempt to research the occult goes hilariously awry when a séance summons the ghost of his late wife, Elvira.
What begins as a playful experiment quickly spirals into comic pandemonium as Elvira refuses to return to the beyond, much to the dismay of Charles and his – very much alive – current wife, Ruth.
Directed by Thys Heydenrych, this production offers a fresh, modern and lively take on Coward’s classic, blending vintage charm with a crisp contemporary energy. With a dazzling cast and clever stagecraft, Blithe Spirit celebrates Coward’s timeless wit and mastery of high farce.
This production is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French – with more theatrical catalogues listed on concordtheatricals.co.uk.
The show was planned to start on 28 May, but due to unforeseen circumstances the play was moved to next week.
