Two third-year BMus students won the open category in the National South African Society of Music Teacher (SASMT) Ensamble Competition that took place in Pretoria from 1 to 3 September.
The Rose Duo from the Odeion School of Music (OSM), pianist Karlin Kock and cellist Willie Naudé, delivered an extraordinary performance that left an impression on the judges and audience.
The two, under the guidance of their mentors Nicolene Gibbons for piano and Prof. Anmari van der Westhuizen for cello, played a meticulously curated selections of work that they also played in the preliminary rounds.
- The works were: Andante molto tranquillo from Edvard Grieg’s Sonata for cello and piano, Op. 36;) Ludwig van Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No. 4 in C major, Op. 102/1, featuring the exhilarating Allegro vivace;) Dmitri Shostakovich’s hauntingly beautiful Sonata for cello and piano in D Minor, Op. 40.
It was the third consecutive year that an OSM ensemble reached top spot in the open category.
The SASMT Ensemble Competition continues to stand out as a beacon of artistic development.
The competition nurtures the growth of budding musicians by promoting the power of collaboration and the joy of shared performance.
Among its primary objectives is the cultivation of a deep-seated appreciation for ensemble music among young talents who are on the cusp of their soloist careers.
