Cyclers can still enter for the second edition of the Sungazer 100 Miler cycle race taking place on 31 May. The race starts and ends in Bloemfontein.

Enter for the 160km, 84km or 44km race, over terrain catering to various levels of challenge and experience. It starts at 07:00 from Tiffany’s in Bloemfontein, where it also ends.

This challenging route on scenic gravel roads offers a challenging yet accessible ride – whether you are a gravel or mountain bike enthusiast. E-bikes are eligible to participate in the half distance category to qualify for podium positions.

However, participation on an e-bike is not limited to only the half distance. One can enter for the full or quarter distances, but will not eligible for podium positions.

Entry fees are as follows:

  • full distance 160km: R900
  • half distance 84km: R500
  • quarter distance 44km: R300
  • Entries close on 23 May.

The first edition of the Sungazer 100 Miler on 1 June last year, saw cyclers from amongst others the Northern Cape and Free State conquering the distances.

Gideon Geldenhuys was the overall men’s winner in 05:08:59. Carla Oberholzer was the overall women’s winner, and second overall in 05:17:50.

After the event, Oberholzer thanked Oryx Endurance Event Management for a “gritty introduction to this exciting discipline”.

More races scheduled for this year

The next race presented by Oryx Endurance Event Management, takes place on 30 August. This event, the popular MTB challenge, Race2TheKaroo, commences and ends at the Witput Country Lodge at Hopetown in the Northern Cape.

The third edition of the Race2TheKaroo take cyclers on a 160km journey through the Karoo landscapes of the Northern Cape.
