It is that time of year again where Bloemfontein’s gardening guru Thabo Olivier is looking for the Biggest Tomato in Bloemfontein.
All gardeners and even those who have not previously dabbled in gardening, can take part in this fun competition during the next few months.
If you grow the biggest tamato in Bloemfontein, you not only get bragging rights, but you sure will enjoy lots of huge, juicy tomatoes and stand a chance to win one of three prizes.
The seedlings of the Mortgage Lifter tomatoes that Olivier grew especially for the competition, are now available for R45 at Greenside Nursery. Participants can buy as many of these seedlings as they which and have time until 31 March to grow tomatoes.
Seedlings will be available as long as stocks last. Only tomatoes grown from these seedlings, are eligible for the prizes.
All proceeds from the sale of seedlings will be used for prizes for the three biggest tomatoes.
When you have a tomato that you want to enter for the competition, take it back to Greenside Nursery where it will be weighed in.
A leaderboard will be put up at Greenside to keep participants up to speed with weights of tomatoes that was brought in.
If you think your biggest tomato has a chance of winning, take a selfie of you with the tomato after you weighed it in at Greenside. Send a WhatsApp with your picture, name and surname (age if you are a scholar), your neighbourhood and weight of the tomato to Bloem News at 083-709-0809.
