Severe downpours are predicted from Sunday (11/12) until about Wednesday.
This is according to Michael Nethavani from the Bloemfontein weather office.
He says normal summer storms are predicted for today and Saturday (10/12) by early evening, but this will turn into heavy rain from Sunday.
Nethavani says the predictions is 100% rain from Sunday and the days to follow.
This rain is because of a strong cut-off low pressure system that will bring more rain from today onwards throughout the weekend.
A cut-off low is an upper air trough that strengthens and becomes cut-off from the main westernly flow in the upper levels of the atmosphere and spins off on its own.
These systems are associated with high atmospehric instability and strong updrafts and are one of the largest causes of devastating floods like South Africa saw on 11 and 12 April in KwaZulu-Natal.
Weather models show forecasts for heavy rain with at least 30 to 60 mm in places like the Free State, Gauteng, North-West and the interior of KwaZulu-Natal.
The public is warned to exercise extreme caution when crossing low-water bridges to avoid being swept away.
