A local hiking club is planning a Heritage Hiking Extravaganza at Golden Gate to raise awareness on climate change.
George Moleme, a committee member of the Maoto Mpepe Ke Tswa Hole Hiking Club, says they are exited about this national event that will take place from 22 to 25 September.
“The event will give club members and visitors the opportunity to take part in hikes, tackle 4 x 4 off-road trails, enjoy sightseeing and much more. We want families to join us to enjoy the beautiful Golden Gate National Park and to relax in nature.”
Moleme says they envisage making this a yearly event to boost tourism in the Free State.
Rene Khumalo says the club, formed in 2016, annually undertakes two big hikes: one in Lesotho and one in Botswana.
“Appart from that, we take hikes every two weeks in and around the Free State,” confirms Khumalo.
Moleme says the club has around 200 members, of which 70% are women.
“We want to promote nature-based sports tourism and an active lifestyle.”
For the event the club is planning, participants can choose their accommodation to enjoy the type of camping they prefer. The entire Glen Reenen Rest Camp is booked out for hikers during that weekend.
“We are going to engage with learners on different topics like littering and why we should all take care of the environment.”
Moleme says there are hikes like the Ribbok and the 14 Mountain Peak Hiking Trails for hard core hikers, but also some easy day hikes for those that are not as fit or adventurous.
“We want to get people engaged in nature and enjoying everything hiking can offer them – not only the environment they hike in, but also all the health benefits of hiking.”
As part of the weekend, there will be a potjiekos dinner, showcasing the different traditions of people living in and around South Africa.
