As the matric exams near their conclusion, Kgalalelo Mokhaneli has made headlines for his inspiring achievement. With just one week left until the final papers on Thursday, 28 November, Kgalalelo, a student at Martie du Plessis School in Bloemfontein, completed his last exam in Sesotho—using a pen held expertly between the toes of his left foot.
Born without arms, Kgalalelo has faced significant challenges, but he remains determined and optimistic about his future. He describes the exams as tough but believes he performed well, particularly enjoying his favorite subject, Business Studies.
Marinel Read, a social worker at the special needs school, expressed pride in watching students like Kgalalelo grow and gain confidence for the future. Originally from Phuthaditjaba, Qwaqwa, Kgalalelo faced difficulties in childhood, feeling different from his peers. However, with the support of his wonderful mother, he learned to write with his foot after starting school at Tswellang Special School in Bloemfontein.
Kgalalelo’s academic strength led him to Martie du Plessis for grade 10, and he has big dreams, having been provisionally accepted to study law at the University of the Free State next year. As he awaits his matric results, hopes are high for this hardworking and dedicated young man.
