Four ward councillor positions will be contested in the municipal by-elections held in Bloemfontein in the Mangaung Metro on Wednesday, 11 September.

The wards in question are: 18, 20, 22 and 25.

Ward 18 was previously represented by the DA and includes areas such as Fauna, Kellys View, Bainsvlei, the Parys Small Holdings and Ferreira. The two candidates are Masego Mildred Phetlhu of the ANC and Gregory Owen van Noord of the DA.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal by-elections was 49,83%

Ward 20, which includes Dan Pienaar, Brandwag, Heuwelsig and parts of Pentagon Park, was aslo previously represented by the DA. The two candidates are Mojeng Phillip Tsatsi of the ANC and Corize van Rensburg of the DA.

The voter turnout for this ward in the previous municipal by-elections was 57,43%.

Mosa Mpakane of the ANC and Jan-Hendrik Cronje of the DA are the candidates for Langenhovenpark, which forms ward 22 and was represented by the DA.

Previous voter turnout was 59,14%.

The candidates for ward 25, which includes Pellissier and Fichardtpark, are Shadrack Mbulelo Thukani of the ANC and Paul Maré Kotzé of the DA. This was also a DA ward.

Voter turnout for this ward was 66,09% in the previous municipal by-election.

Three of the previous ward councillors – David Mc Kay (ward 18), Dulandi Leech (ward 22) and Werner Pretorius (ward 20) – are now members of the Free State Provincial Legislature. The position of councillor for ward 25 became vacant when the previous councillor, Rossouw Botes, became a proportionate DA council member. Botes passed away in the Life Rosepark Hospital on 19 August.

Voting stations will be open on Wednesday from 07:00 to 21:00.
