Learners again have the opportunity to take part in the Free State Young Artists Awards presented by the National Museum, in celebration of Youth Month.

In the spirit of World Environment Day observed on 5 June, the 2023 competition calls for works of art with the theme “Solutions to plastic pollution”.

World Environment Day 2023 was aimed at creating awareness around people’s actions when it comes to plastic pollution.

Plastic plays a role in three environmental areas: climate change, biodiversity and pollution. According to the United Nations, over 430 million tonnes of plastic become waste annually.

The arts have always been a tool for commenting on and creating awareness about contentious issues, and this competition is a perfect platform for creative expression in this regard.

The categories for participation are:

  • category A, for preschool learners aged five to nine years – with prize money of R600 (first place), R300 (second) and R150 (third);
  • category B, for learners ten to 14 years old – with prize money of R1 000 (first), R600 (second) and R300 (third); and
  • category C, for high school learners 15 to 19 years old – with prize money of R1 700 (first), R1 000 (second) and R750 (third).

Only original works of art created in 2023 can be entered, and works must speak to and highlight the theme. These can be two or three dimensional and be made of a variety of mediums – no larger than 1 m x 1 m x 1 m or weighing more than 30 kg.

All entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form, available at the museum. The competition closes on 5 August. No late entries will be accepted.

The collection point for works is the National Museum at 36 Aliwal Street, Bloemfontein.
