Although 2021 was a tough year, Marco Markgraaff, swimming coach for the University of the Free State (UFS), believes his swimmers are on the right track heading towards the South African senior nationals in April.
Markgraaff reflected on the way Kobus Groenewald and Mariné Nortjé wrapped up the year in the pool.
His swimmers dominated at the Free State championships, claimed many podium positions and broke championship records.
At the championships, held in Bloemfontein from 8 to 12 December, Nortjé set Free State records in the 50 m freestyle (27.63) and 100 m freestyle (59.68). She finished first in both events.
The Kovsie claimed a second place in the 200 m freestyle, a second in the 100 m butterfly and finished fourth in the 50 m butterfly.
Groenewald also turned on the heat in the pool and bagged four gold medals.
He was first in the 50 m freestyle, 100 m freestyle, 200 m freestyle and 50 m backstroke.
The young swimmer claimed another podium finish when he was second in the 50 m butterfly stroke.
“I am really proud of them,” says Markgraaff.
Although 2021 brought trying conditions for his swimmers, he believes they are “in a good place” and progressing well.
