They will not sit under the shade of these trees while they are at school, but a tree is planted for future generations.

This was the message for learners of the Kruitberg Primary School in Hilton who planted 70 trees on Friday to celebrate Arbor Day.

The idea came from Wilna Mostert, a teacher at Kruitberg, to get all 1 620 learners involved in a project to plant trees on the school grounds and care for them.

Each class received a River Bush-willow sponsored by Karee Nursery as well as a tyre, wire and poles to protect the young trees.

Each class had to plant the tree and now have to take care of it for the rest of the year. Next year a new class will take care of that tree.

The acting school principal, Solly Moholo, said trees bring new life.

“The best time to plant a tree, is 20 years ago,” he quoted a Chinese proverb. “The second best time is now.”

Also present at the special day, was Tselagale Dorcus Ralepei, the Cheif Education Specialist for Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Primary Schools at the Free State Department of Education.

She helped the representative council of learners to plant a special tree and named this tree Knowledge is Power.

Some of the other trees were named Love, Life and Faith.
