A learner of the Jim Fouché High School has qualified for the Amateur World Powerlifting Championships (AWPC), after he broke a South African record and surpassed three world records at a championship in Benoni.
Conrad van der Zwaard (17) is part of the team from the Bloem Barbell Club at the Training Edge Gym in Fichardtpark that went to the Urban Shack in Benoni to compete in two championships from 13 to 15 June.

Conrad improved on the world record in weighted squats (230kg), bench press (130kg) and deadlift (230kg), giving him a world record total of 590kg. All were Conrad’s personal bests.
Barnard (Barries) Steyn placed second with a personal best in the 110kg category. He reached 220kg in squats, 120kg in bench press, and 225kg in deadlift with a total of 565kg.

Both qualified for the Amateur World Championship in Idaho, America, from 28 to 31 August.
The rest of the team took part in die World Powerlifting Congress (WPC).
Guy Conroy, head coach of the Bloem Barbell Club, took first place in the M3 110kg category. He attained 250kg in the squat, 162,5kg in bench press, and 257.5kg in deadlift – totaling 670kg. He set six new South African records with his attempts.

Dawie Viljoen came third in the open 110kg category. For squats, he reached 235kg; bench press 187.5kg; and a deadlift of 250kg (672.5kg in total) – all personal bests.
Van der Westhuisen, Guy, and Mariaan Conroy qualify for the World Powerlifting Congress (WPC) Championships that will be held in Durban from 4 to 9 November.
In the women’s category, Mariaan Conroy came second in the M1 90kg category. She managed 105kg in the bench press.
Coach Bibi Bernice van der Westhuizen won the open category and attained 150kg in the squat, 85kg for bench press (personal best), and a 175kg deadlift – with a total of 410kg.
