More than a 1 000 families in Bloemfontein and its surrounds use homeschool curriculums for their children.
The children and parents who are part of the Bloemfontein Homeschool group are busy with a variety of projects and activities.
From 25 to 28 July, they had a recycling art and dress competition that was on display at Preller Walk.
Ava Fourie won the best dress title out of seven entries, and Kaegen Fourie made a beautiful giraffe from recycled bottles to win the art section of the competition.
Lara Slippers-Pienaar, one of the mothers within the group, said the homeschool group embarks on a wide range of outings and projects with different parents taking the lead.
Leanie van der Merwe said when she got involved with homeschool eight years ago, there were only ten families.
“There are so many advantages to homeschooling your child. The children interact a lot with other homeschooling families and do not only mix with children of their own age, but with youngsters of all ages.”
Each family chooses the curriculum that suits them best, and children can work at their own pace.
Many of the homeschoolers take part in all sorts of sports activities, especially individual sports. They also have their own netball teams that compete in a league.
The homeschoolers are now working on one of the highlights of the year: their annual concert on Saturday, 7 September, at the hall of the Free State Residential Care Centre.
The theme is “Blast through the Past” looking through history at well-known figures through the ages.
