A young woman taking part in the Bloemfontein Offroad Club (Borc) not only loves riding her motorcycle and being challenged by other competitors, but uses this passion to elevate her charity efforts to greater heights.
Misha Bukes (16) and her mother, Jeanette, have been collecting food for organisations that help the needy with Misha’s project, MX for Charity.
Jeanette explains this will be their fourth operational year and that they hope to collect more non-perishable food than ever.
“This is our way to give back,” says Misha.
“During the festive season we collect everything from non-perishable food to hats, umbrellas, sunscreen and old clothes.”
She especially wants to make this Christmas special for Bloemfontein’s car guards and also support Hester Bekker of the Guardian and Angel non-profit organisation (NPO), who hands out food parcels to the less fortunate in the community.
The idea of paying it forward to charity started alongside Misha taking a liking to the sport of motocross. She started in 2021 on a 125cc Husqvarna motorcycle and came 18th in the North vs South women’s race that year.
In 2023, she was the Free State-Northern Cape champion in the women’s class for girls 12 years and older.
In June this year she swiched to a bigger bike, taking part in the KTM 250cc category, and came seventh in the North vs South race in August in Bloemfontein.
She also started competing in off-road championships, planning to take part in the big motocross events and focus more on off-road races.
“It is because of the joy I get from participating in this sport, that I really want to give to others,” Misha explains.
Collections can be done until 15 December. The mother-daughter duo will collect from anywhere in Bloemfontein.
