Another senior official of the Mangaung Metro was killed yesterday shortly after leaving the municipal offices in Rocklands, Bloemfontein. Luzuko Ntlabezo (48), the technical manager of the metro’s Department of Water and Sanitation, was shot around 15:45 while driving down Mjiba Street with his personal assistant in his red Mazda.
According to police spokesperson Capt. Loraine Earl, an unknown assailant approached the vehicle and opened fire on the driver’s side. Police recovered four empty cartridges from the scene. Ntlabezo was pronounced dead on the scene, while his colleague was treated for shock but remained unharmed.
Earl confirmed that a murder investigation is underway, with no suspects currently in custody.
In a statement released today, Qondile Khedama, spokesperson for the Mangaung Metro, described Ntlabezo as an experienced water engineer committed to serving the community. He joined the municipality in 2012 and was instrumental in ensuring a consistent water supply for residents.
City Manager Sello More noted that Ntlabezo had considered leaving the city but chose to stay and contribute his expertise to the metro. “His assassination will leave a significant void in the municipality,” More stated.
While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, More emphasized the importance of allowing police to conduct their investigation. He extended condolences to Ntlabezo’s family, friends, and colleagues.
- This incident adds to a troubling trend of violence against municipal officials. Recent victims include Andries Mgoqi, CEO of Centlec, who was shot in front of a tavern on 16 February, and David Khanda, another Centlec official, who was killed outside his home on 2 September 2022.
