BLOEMFONTEIN. The Phaphama Book Festival is an annual celebration of literature, learning and culture, where authors of note have their say.

The festival starting on 22 October at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), will focus on art that deserves the spotlight.

Running for four days, it will feature exhibitions, masterclasses, book launches, a literary tour and debate competitions. The festival brings together authors, readers and communities to promote literacy, creativity and social impact, underscoring the value of books as a powerful tool for empowerment and transformation.

Some of the keynote addresses on the first day of the festival include that of Dr Sujata Tiwari, an author, entrepreneur and social justice advocate from Singapore.

Some of the minds shaping tomorrow that will also be part of the week’s discussions are Dr Allen Mutono, Tseliso Mpekoa and Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo.

During the masterclass on Thursday, 23 October, a panel discussion will investigate the bond between the traditional science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) subjects and the arts to foster creativity, critical thinking and innovation (Steam), with the Steam family highlighting the transformative power of art in life and careers.

One of the highlights of the programme is a literary tour and 150 year celebration of the Adeleide Tambo Public Library.

Dr Mathews Phosa will address the attendants on 24 October on his book Mathews Phosa – Witness to Power: A Political Memoir.

On 25 October, on the final day of the festival, the Phaphama High School Debate Competition will take place.

Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo will be the guest speaker at the business breakfast on the Saturday.
