Medals proof of learners’ mettle

Ten athletes from the Eunice High School competed at the Free State Athletics Championships in Sasolburg on 3 and 4 March. This is after they were placed in top spots during the annual Inter-High Athletics (Motheo – Xhariep) on Saturday 25 February at the Free State stadium

At the Free State Championships, the athletes from Eunice bagged a total of nine medals

  • In the U14 division: Camilyn Parkin won silver in the 400 m; ) Sade Gird won silver in long jump; and) Mika-Leigh Strydom won silver in the 800 m and 1500 m;
  • In the U15 division: Megan Bezuidenhout won high jump;
  • In the U16 division: Inge van Staden won silver in 400 m, bronze in 800 m and bronze in 1500 m;) The relay team came third in the 4 x 100 m relay. They were Olwam Delihlazo, Inge van Staden, Ruvimbo Pasipamire, and Leecha Swanepoel;
  • The other top 10 results are as follows: U14 – Camilyn Parkin fourth in 800 m;) U15 – Linke du Toit seventh in long jump;) Leecha Swanepoel placed seventh in the 200 m race;
  • In the U16 division: Olwam Delihlazo came fith in the 100 m race;) The relay team (4 x 100 m relay) with Camilyn Parkin, Sade Gird, Linke du Toit and Mika-Leigh Strydom came fourth.
  • In the U17 division Reatile Pitso came eight in long jump. Twenty-eight of the Eunice High School athletes competed at the annual Inter-High Athletics (Motheo – Xhariep) on Saturday 25 February at the Free State stadium and won 15 medals.

These medals include five gold, six silver and three bronze.

The athletes who received medals were:

U14:
) Mika-Leigh Strydom – gold in the 800 m and gold in the 1 500 m; ) Camilyn Parkin – silver in the 400 m and silver in the 800 m;) Sade Gird – silver in long jump.

U15:
) Linke du Toit – gold in the long jump; ) Megan Bezuidenhout – silver the high jump;) Leecha Swanepoel – bronze in the 200 m; ) 4 x 100 m relay – bronze (Camilyn Parkin, Mika-Leigh Strydom, Mikyla Fernandes, and Linke du Toit);

U16:
) Olwam Delihlazo – bronze 100 m; ) Inge van Staden – gold in the 800 m, gold in the 1500 m and silver in 100 m;) 4 x 100m relay – silver (Olwam Delihlazo, Inge van Staden, Mika-Leigh Strydom, and Leecha Swanepoel).
