Whether you are renting or purchasing a home, there are certain necessities that every home should have, more so given the increased security and load shedding risks in the country.
Given the frequency at which home owners are hit with power outages, agents of the Seeff Property Group highlight these as the ten most important items to have at your disposal:
1. Gas stove or burner. This is a lifesaver during power outages, especially as these often fall over meal times. Aside from being able to braai during this time, at least you can cook and boil water.
2. Rechargeable light and a flashlight. Given the volatility of the electricity supply, it is advisable that you keep a flashlight handy and have a few rechargeable lights to use during the evening.
3. Water tank and a hot water flask. Given the water challenges, it is now worthwhile keeping a stock of fresh water (at least 10 litres), and a hot water flask. The bigger, the better.
4. Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and a back-up battery system. A UPS can keep your internet and computer going, while a back-up battery system can power a TV, lights, and security system.
5. First aid kit. Keep items such as plasters, gauzes, disinfectant, and any medication you may need in an emergency.
6. Fire extinguisher. There is some concern that the increased load shedding can lead to higher risks of fire. Either way, it is always advisable to have a fire extinguisher close at hand.
7. Basic tool kit. Keep a few basic items such as a screwdriver set, pliers, hammer, and a wrench on hand along with basics such as spare light bulbs, plugs, and double sided tape.
8. Enough packing space. The more space you have, the neater your house is likely to be and the less cleaning you will need to do.
9. Portfolio of documents. Keep all important documents together such as birth, marriage and academic certificates, bond and loan documents, vehicle details, medical and insurance policies.
10. Printed photographs. With modern technology it is easy to store precious memories on your cell phone or computer, but these can get lost. Make a habit of printing a few every so often to keep in storage.
Bear in mind, this would be in addition to the normal items that every household should have such as good cleaning items and a few emergency supplies of non-perishable food.
