International Mother Tongue Day, celebrated annually on 21 February, was created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

The Language Services unit of the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (DSACR) in the Free State celebrated International Mother Tongue Day at the Bon Hotel in Bloemfontein. This was the unit’s response to Unesco’s call that the decade from 2022 to 2032 should be designated to celebrating the rich heritage of indigenous languages.

Learners of several schools in and around Mangaung who have excelled in their respective indigenous languages were awarded for their performance by the department.
