With more than two decades of experience in management alone, the new hospital manager at Mediclinic Bloemfontein brings enthusiasm and a positive attitude to the biggest hospital in the Mediclinic Group.

Carol Defty took up her duties in Bloemfontein at the beginning of February. She moved here from Cape Town.

“People ask me why I moved from Cape Town to Bloemfontein, and I say to them – why not? My husband and I have a house in the Karoo, which we adore.

“I find Bloemfontein and the pace of life here much calmer than the rushed lifestyle in the Cape,” she says.

Defty’s expertise spans various facets of hospital management, making her well-equipped to lead Mediclinic Bloemfontein towards even greater heights.

”I am passionate about patient-centered care, operational efficiency, and fostering a positive work environment for healthcare professionals. I want our hospital to be a centre where our employees are passionate about the care they deliver and our patients recognise our teams for their experience and expertise,” she explains.

She is impressed with the hospital and its staff.

I believe in leadership characterised by a balance of strategic vision and hands-on involvement.

Defty says although the hospital is new to her, she has been at the group for a long time.

“It is new, but the same.”

Having served in key leadership roles in Mediclinic, Defty has earned a reputation for implementing innovative solutions to enhance patient care.

“I love to impart the knowledge I have accumulated over the years, and I am also keen to learn new things. My vision is to coninuously improve systems to work better for all. It is important to constantly review processes to save time.”

One of Defty’s notable strengths is her ability to foster collaboration among multidisciplinary teams. Recognising that a hospital’s success lies in a collective effort, she is known for promoting open communication and teamwork.

“I believe that our team will continue to serve as a valuable asset to our community. We have a strong multidisciplinary offering to meet needs, and I am very optimistic about the positive improvements I can bring to the workplace culture and patient outcomes.

“I am excited to be here at Mediclinic Bloemfontein,” Defty concludes.
