Bloemfontein taekwondo instructor Rohan Verwey was one of only two South Africans to be awarded mastership in this sport on Saturday (05/11).

He and JP Vorster, from Secunda, went to Little Rock in America for the masters ceremony.

They are the first South Africans of Always Take Action (ATA) Songahm Taekwondo South Africa to be awarded the title of master instructors in taekwondo.

This comes after the first-ever South African National Songahm Taekwondo Championship was held in Bloemfontein from 6 to 9 October at Grey College.

Verwey (6th dan) is the owner of the Rohan Verwey Martial Arts Club, which is part of ATA International Taekwondo and Martial Arts South Africa (Masa).

At the national event, Master Jesse Isaacs from America presented sessions in this form of martial arts style and took part in the judging.

Bloemfontein students who were chosen to go to the ATA World Taekwondo Championship in Poenix, Arizona, in July 2023, are: Denica Scheepers, Rohan Verwey, Johan Verwey, Aiden Nienaber, Aiden Richards, Adrian De Roubaix, JB Rouwenhorst, Keabetswe Khoathela, Diané Rossouw, Mari-Lousie Avenant, Caiden Carrick, Omphile Legobo, Jowaad Khan and Petrus Bouillon.
