A lot of hard work, dedication, and discipline throughout his schooling career has resulted in the 18-year-old Sello Sesing being chosen for the Limpopo provincial cricket team.

Sesing, who matriculated from the St Andrew’s School Bloemfontein in 2022, was honoured by his alma mater for this achievement on Thursday (15/06).

He is the 16th professional player that the school has produced in 15 years. This is quite an achievement, if one takes into acount that St Andrew’s only has 380 high school learners.

Sesing, who grew up in a single-parent household, comes from an informal settlement in Kroonstad.

Gregg Hobson, director of cricket at St Andrew’s, first heard about the talented young cricket player while he still lived in Kroonstad. Upon seeing what the then 13-year-old Sesing had to offer, the school offered him a full scholarship that would see him through his high school career.

Sesing grabbed the opportunity and made the most of the his time and opportunities afforded to him at Saints.

His coach, AJ van Wyk, who took over coaching the first team in 2019, says Sesing is one of the most hard-working players.

“He was not the most talented player, but he never let an opportunity pass him by to work and train hard,” Van Wyk said.

“When Sello came to the school, it became his home. His favourite player is Steve Smith.

“He would watch cricket over the weekend, and on Monday his batting technique would be different, mimicking that of Smith.”

After matriculating, Sesing applied himself to furthering his business studies at the University of the Free State (UFS).

Since attending university, he has played in two games for the Kovsies team and has performed well.

On account of his performance and diligence, he stood out from the rest of his teammates and was granted the opportunity to play in the second division for Limpopo.

“My road was tough and it was hard for me to adapt in the beginning,” Sello said on Thursday, reflecting on his schooling career and the trials he endured thus far.

“I had to learn English and work really hard. It is wonderful to know that dreams do come true if you work hard.”

Sesing will start playing for his new team in Polokwane in August.
