Kroonstad police have launched an intensive manhunt following a brazen burglary at the Moqhaka Parks Municipality building in Kroonstad.
The shocking break-in, which occurred in the early hours of Monday 1 December was discovered by a municipality employee who arrived at work to find disturbing signs of a serious security breach.
The employee’s initial shock came when he noticed the damaged alarm control box, signalling something was terribly wrong. Upon further investigation, he discovered that the amnesty room’s door had been forcibly opened, seemingly using a sophisticated grinding tool. The situation grew more alarming as he entered the armoury and realised the extent of the theft.
Investigators found that two steel safes had been meticulously cut open, revealing a massive security vulnerability. The stolen items are particularly concerning: approximately 43 firearms, including 9mm pistols, revolvers, and pump guns, along with 1 105 rounds of ammunition and 6 protective bullet vests. The scale and precision of the theft have raised serious questions about municipal security protocols.
Local law enforcement has mobilised quickly, with Kroonstad police intensifying their manhunt to track down the perpetrators. The incident not only represents a significant financial loss but also poses a potential public safety threat given the number of weapons stolen.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the break-in to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. Contact Col. Ben Bolsiek of Provincial Organised Crime on 082 466 8530 or police crimeline 08600 10111 or drop an anonymous tip-off on MySapsApp.
