After many years in the making, Asah Productions, in collaboration with MyArts International, brings Obeah Opera to Bloemfontein with the support of the Canadian Government.
This will be the first time for The Soweto Theatre, Performing Arts Centre Of The Free State (Pacofs, and the South Africa State Theatre to jointly host a Canadian original opera featuring a talented ensemble of females dedicated to delivering a high-quality, unforgettable experience that celebrates cultural diversity and female empowerment.
Obeah Opera, the hand-clapping, foot-stomping, spirit-lifting, magical musical sensation, will premiere in South Africa in August, in celebration of Women’s Month. It is a retelling of the legendary Salem witch trials, from the perspective of Caribbean slave women.
The opera, written and composed by Nicole Brooks, is an all-female a cappella production that fuses rich harmonies and rhythmic complexity togheter, creating a mesmerizing and deeply moving experience.
The tour’s timing during South Africa’s Women’s Month is particularly significant, as Obeah Opera highlights themes of female empowerment, resilience and unity.
This celebration of women’s voices aligns perfectly with the spirit of Women’s Month, honouring the contributions and strength of women throughout history and today.
The production at the André Huguenet Theatre will be on show on 15 to 17 August at 18:00.
