The physiotherapy profession in South African is celebrating its 100th year.
The South African Society of Physiotherapy (SASP), which was formed a century ago, is the custodian of the profession and is not only looking forward to its centenary celebrations, but also to marking its existence as the first professional organisation to guard and maintain the profession – as well as its achievements over the years.
This society has its origin in 1921, when a small group of masseurs in Cape Town banded together to form the Certified Masseurs Association, primarily in order to fight for inclusion in the Medical, Dental and Pharmacy Act of 1928. In this they were partially successful, and in 1931 the registration of masseurs was gazetted.
At the same time, a similar group was formed in Natal as the UK Chartered Society of Massage and Remedial Gymnastics.
Realising the need for a countrywide organisation, these two groups met to hold the inaugural meeting of the South African Society of Massage and Medical Gymnastics in December 1924.
The SASP has the dual objective of ensuring the highest possible standard of physiotherapy services and ensuring the welfare and advancement of its member physiotherapists.
The Free State branch of the SASP organises all local activities, including sending students in Physiotherapy as volunteers to help athletes along the way at the Comrades Marathon each year.
- The local branch is celebrating the huge milestone of the SASP in many ways, including a colouring competition for children between six and ten years old.
A winner will be drawn from the entries submitted, who will walk away with a Takealot voucher of R1 000 – courtesy of the SASP Free State.
To enter, children must colour in the picture on the hard copy of BloemNews of 3 October, and take a photo of the completed picture. Only one entry per participant will be accepted. Send the photo via WhatsApp to 079-811-0627 by Friday, 8 November.
Make sure to get you copy of BloemNews from retailers all over Bloemfontein and hot spots throughout the towns around Bloemfontein where BloemNews are delivered on Thursdays. The picture will only appear once.
By submitting an entry, participants give permission for their personal details to be used for marketing purposes related to the profession.
Direct all enquiries about the competition to the provincial administrator on 051-5221404 or freestate@saphysio.co.za.
