The Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads, and Transport, in partnership with the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, has launched a groundbreaking initiative to tackle the issue of potholes on the province’s roads.

This innovative project focuses on empowerment, skills-building, and creating jobs for unskilled women and youthS, while also repairing roads and addressing infrastructure challenges.

Since its launch in November 2023, the project has already created over 550 jobs, with a target of 650 by the end of February.

Work is now underway in all five districts of the province, with road sections in Mangaung, Xhariep, Lejweleputswa, Thabo Mofutsanyana, and Fezile Dabi receiving attention.

The project’s ambitious goal is to repair 70 000 m² of road sections by the end of March. The initiative is also placing a strong emphasis on skills training and knowledge sharing, providing 650 learners with Construction Education and Training Authority (Ceta)-accredited training. The ongoing research being conducted will ensure that the solutions implemented for long-term road maintenance are sustainable.

This Pothole Repair Programme is a shining example of the positive impact of collaboration, innovation, and community empowerment.

The initiative leads to improved road conditions and a prosperous future for all Free State residents.
