The Free State Department of Education has announced that the School Governing Body (SGB) elections would be held in the province from 1 until 31 March.

This comes as the current term of SGB office bearers ends in March.

Parents are encouraged to participate in the election campaign for the new SGB office bearers and are to elect candidates who possess the relevant skills.

Required skills include legal, administrative and accounting competencies.

According to the department, the SGB committee should comprise of parents, teachers, non-teaching members, learners (Gr. 8 or higher), and members of staff who are not teachers.

This diversity is encouraged by the department, adding that these individuals are significant to ensuring progressive management at respective schools.

By law, SBG office bearers serve three years.

Throughout this month, the Department of Basic Education will share detailed information on the electoral process, nomination procedures, and critical dates.
