An opening partnership of 155 in 25,5 overs between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal laid a solid foundation for India on their way to a commanding nine-wicket victory, thus securing the three-match one-day international (ODI) series between the two nations 2-1.

After winning the second match on Wednesday 3 December to level the series 1-1, the Proteas went into the match hoping to snatch the win and walk away as winners of both the Test and ODI series in India.

However, it was not to be as Jaiswal 116* (121) and Sharma tormented the South African bowlers.

The pair struck the ball to all corners of the field with the vociferous crowd cheering them on. When Sharma was dismissed, Virat Kohli walked into the crease to join Jaiswal. The duo continued the onslaught, racing to 271 runs in 39,5 overs.

Earlier, Quinton de Kock smashed a brilliant 106 (89). However, regular fall of wickets halted the team’s momentum, with Temba Bavuma’s 48 (67) being the second-highest score. Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna took four wickets each to limit the Proteas to 270 all out in 47.5 overs.

The two sides will now turn their attention to the shorter version of the game, with the first T20 on Tuesday, November 9.
