Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, spokesperson for the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Provjoints) said the police has taken notice of the circulating messages and want to assure the community that there is no need for panic.

“These messages and voice-notes are currently being assessed and processed by our intelligence community, and necessary steps will be taken to operationalize any relevant information, should the need arise,” he said in a media statement this afternoon.

Makhele said they are closely monitoring the situation and will act in the best interest of public safety.

“We urge all residents to remain calm and stop spreading these messages further, but rather carry on with their daily activities without fear of disruption. Should any unlawful actions occur, we will not hesitate to respond swiftly and decisively to ensure the protection of all residents.”

He said Provjoints warns those that plan any type of march or demonstration to ensure that their activities are within the law. “Law enforcement agencies will not stand idle while others’ rights are unlawfully infringed upon,” he warned.
