Shoprite and Checkers is offering vehicle owners money back in their pockets with a discounted fee for car licence renewals. This special offer is valid until 31 January 2024, having officially started on 1 November.

For a discounted fee of R185 motorists can renew their vehicle licence online and pay either online or in-person at the Money Market counter in any of the 1 350 Shoprite, Checkers and Usave stores nationwide.

“With soaring living costs, times are tough for consumers. We hope to provide some relief by reducing the cost of car licence renewals and providing a hassle-free process that can be completed in just a few easy steps,” said Jean Olivier, general manager of financial services at the Shoprite Group.

The licence fee and possible penalties are variable, and a quote will be provided once the renewal process has commenced. Vehicle licences can also be paid for at the Money Market counters at OK Furniture, House & Home, and selected OK Foods franchise outlets.

The process is as follows:

Vehicle owners are advised to have ready all the correct documents – a current car licence disc, a barcoded identity document (ID) book or Smartcard ID, and proof of residence – to renew their licence effortlessly.

Vehicle owners must follow the following steps:

Step 1 – Capture your information online.

Step 2 – Pay online via Computicket or in-store.

Step 3 – Courier delivery within five to ten business days.

What does it cost?

The fixed renewal fees are:

Admin fee – R110,25

Delivery fee – R74,75

Total fee – R185

The retail group’s renew license initiative is in response to the millions of South African vehicle licenses that expired during September and October period set as deadline by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC). Numerous extensions, to the motor vehicle licence expiry date, that were granted during the Covid-19 period, resulted in a backlog and a high number of renewals falling within the months of August, September, October, November, and December.

Vehicle owners can take advantage of this convenient and cost-effective method of renewal, and are encouraged to register their profiles at online.natis.gov.za.
