They were so impressed with the St Michael’s School of 2024.

So said many of the Old Girls of the matric class of 1974 who attended the big 150th year celebrations this past weekend of 14 September at the girl’s school in Brandwag.

They were some of the learners that were moved from the school’s previous location in Markgraff Street to the new school grounds in Klerck Avenue in 1971.

St Michael’s held a big reunion for all Old Girls and teachers on 14 to 15 September, celebrating the milestone of 150 years. The Old Girls came from all corners of the country and even the world, including countries like America, England, Mexico, Denmark, Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia, to attend.

The celebrations started on Saturday morning with sports played between school teams and the Old Girls. In the hockey match, the Old Girls showed muscle memory is nothing to scoff at, ending the match 1 – 1.

A special event was the planting of 18 indigenous trees donated by different classes and individuals at the sports grounds near the hockey astro turf.

Martine Bezençon who came from Switserland to attend the reunion, said the visit stirred so many memories from way back.

Altogether, 137 Old Girls attended the weekend including a gala dinner that took place at the Ramblers Club on Saturday.

Messages were deliverd by Teboho Nkala (chairman of the board of governors), Mark Webber (trustee of the Harcourt-Vernon Trust), as well as Sharon Smith, deputy head girl of the 1974 class.

On Sunday, the Old Girls took part in a Eucharist where the bishop of Bloemfontein, Dintoe Letloenyane, led the service.
