The brave little Elsunè (NeyNey) Fyver (4) just wants to go back home to her dogs and her cats and her fish, but for the time being she is stuck in hospital with her farther, Daniel.

She and her dad, mom, Minette, and sister, Deanette (9), does not live far away from the Netcare Universitas Hospital in Bloemfontein were Elsunè receives her treatment, but it could just as well have been a thousand miles away.

Beeing stuck in hospital is nothing new for this beautiful little girl. When NeyNey was 13 months old, she was diagnosed with brain and bone marrow cancer of the spine. This is where her tough journey began with surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation.

After the treatment, Elsunè was doing well during a time of remission – she was a happy three-year-old when she experienced a relapse. A brain tumor was discovered on the right side of her brain in April, and so began the treatment all over again.

In May she had another operation in which the tumour was removed and then she had months of radiation treatment.

She is now receiving chemotherapy sessions spending long weeks in hospital.

“We have a good medical aid,” Daniel explains. “Without it, we would have been lost. The hospital and staff are really wonderful and caring. But still there is a lot of excess payments to be made.”

He and Minette takes turns to stay with Elsunè in hospital and it takes a great toll on this family.

It is to help with the financial burden, that Dewald Fourie from The Pace Foundation wants to help the family.

He organised the NeyNey 5 km Cancer Run on Friday, 24 November at Boomrits Adventures in Langenhovenpark. Pre-entries will start at 17:00 and the 5 km fun run or fun walk wills start at 18:00. The entry fee is R60. Donations is welcome.
