Barry Groenewald, Bloemfontein:

I write regarding the article on the proposed re-establishment of the zoo, as reported on in the Bloem News of 1 September.

I think the re-establishment of the Bloemfontein Zoo is something that should not be considered.

Firstly, I feel that the concept of a zoo is outdated.

The animals end up in an unnatural habitat with poor living conditions, small enclosures and lack of good care. Years ago, the argument was put forth that the zoo aids nature conservation – I cannot see how placing animals in this position will contribute to conservation with a zoo in Bloemfontein.

The fact that the Mangaung Municipality will be involved tells me that this a recipe for a disaster – any funds that is put forth towards the running of the zoo is going to disappear into the hands of officials who will very quickly place the zoo in a position where parties outside the municipality will have to ensure that the animals do not suffer or die of starvation.

The municipality cannot handle their current responsibilities, and adding a zoo to their daily to-do list is courting disaster.

The history of the zoo up to the point where it was closed down will attest to this.

I think the development of a proper safari park near Bloemfontein should rather be considered – and keep the management of such an institution away from the Mangaung Municipality officials.

A safari park will be more beneficial to the overall well-being of the animals and can be developed as a drawcard for Bloemfontein residents, as well as visitors from acrossall over the country.
