There are severe blood stock shortages due to current weather conditions.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in Bloemfontein calls on the public to visit their nearest donation centre and donate life-saving blood. These centres can be found at Bloemfontein’s Victorian Square, Southern Centre, and Bloemplaza shopping complexes. These centres will also be open on Saturdays, with the Southern Centre donation site open on both Saturdays and Sundays.

According to Thandi Mosupye, SANBS senior manager for marketing and communications, the blood service needs to collect 3 500 units of blood a day and is urgently appealing to potential and existing blood donors to contribute.

Mosupye says with the limited blood supply on hand, there is a severe impact on patients who rely on life-saving blood transfusions.

“Whenever our blood stock levels are less than three days’ worth, it places lives at risk. Blood is needed for haemorrhaging mothers during childbirth, newborn babies, accident victims, and thousands of other patients in need of blood.”

Each blood donation gives patients a second chance with their loved ones.

A mobile unit of the SANBS in Bloemfontein will be in front of the Pick n Pay in Northridge Mall on Friday (02/06) and Saturday (03/06).
