Beneficiaries of South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grants, using gold cards to make withdrawals at payment points and at Post Office branches, are advised to use their cards wherever bank cards are accepted.
Beneficiaries can use cards at any retailer’s point of sale (POS) to swipe for goods, or withdraw funds from any retailer with a cash-back functionality. Cash can be withdrawn at Boxer, Pick n Pay, Spar, Shoprite, Usave and Checkers.
According to Sassa and PostBank, by 31 March all cash pay points and Post Office grant payments would have been disabled. Factors include cash-in-transit heists, unfavourable conditions at some cash payment sites, and closure and capacity challenges at Post Office branches.
According to Sassa, as of December 2023, about 98% of beneficiaries use various national payment system channels for grant withdrawals.
