Nathan Megaw of the St Andrew’s School Bloemfontein was placed third in the British Junior International shooting tournament in Bisley in the United Kingdom (UK).

He was part of the South African National Schools Shooters Union team that participated from 4 to 7 August.

At the tournament there were marksmen from Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales – along with the South African team that has been competing in the tournament for years.

Nathan started off with a target sprint discipline (running 400m cross country, and then shooting at five targets) – three times over in a specific time frame. Altogether 15 targets are shot at and, a 1 200m run completed.

The aim of this discipline was for competitors to get to know each other and settle their nerves.

On the second day, Nathan did his three-position discipline. This is comprised of prone, kneeling and standing positions. In this, he was ranked 18th overall, with a score of 523/600.

The third day brought participation in the 10m standing discipline. Nathan placed 21st, with a score of 329/400. The event ended with a final 10m standing discipline, wherein Nathan placed 18th, with a score of 332/400.

Nathan also competed in the mixed team event, with his team ending third and being awarded a bronze medal.

Before this tournament, Nathan was ranked under the top 80 marksman in South African schools. He was invited to do a qualifying shoot in Upington mid April; qualified for the national team; and was ranked 16th overall in the sporter class, U21. He currently shoots for Sentraal Hoërskool.
