Social worker numbers finally boosted

The Free State Department of Social Development has announced the permanent appointment of 38 social workers, from 1 December. This adds to 83 appointed in June. They had been serving on contract basis since 2020, amid Covid-19.


The Free State Department of Social Development has announced the permanent appointment of 38 social workers, from 1 December. This adds to 83 appointed in June. They had been serving on contract basis since 2020, amid Covid-19.

The Free State reportedly had, for eight years, at least 101 vacant positions. A budget cut was cited as a main reason the department could not appoint social workers.
