Jaco Human says coach Leon, as he was fondly known, shared his love for running with everyone.

“With his warm love for running, he lit candles for a new passion in many of us to take part. He had the ability to get you to do things that you never thought you would be able to do. We mis him every day.”

Pieter Potgieter ran his first Two Oceans ultra marathon in April. He said when he entered for the competition, he decided to dedicate the run to the man who installed a love for running in him: Leon Engelbrecht.

“Thank you, Leon, for what you did for runners in Bloem. We miss you every day.”

The chairperson of The Running Edge, which Engelbrecht founded, Alpons van der Merwe, says it is a privilege to celebrate his legacy and life a year after he passed away.

At the run, which will start at 07:30 at the Nelson Mandela Statue on Naval Hill, participants will get the opportuity to write the name of a loved one on a rock and to place it, creating a rock memorial.

This run of CityRun and The Running Edge is presented in association with CANSA. Participation is free. Runners are asked to wear purple or pink, club shirts or CityRun shirts.

There will be pancakes, milk tarts, cooldrink and market stalls. All proceeds will go to the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC).

There will be a water point at 06:30 for everyone doing the club long runs.
