A student of the Central University of Technology (CUT) was allegedly raped at a friend’s home in Bloemfontein on Saturday (23/07).
Dan Maritz, director of marketing and communications of the CUT, said the management was alerted of an incident.
“We commend our law enforcement agencies for the arrest of the alleged perpetrator. The student is receiving the necessary support from the university through the CUT Welness Centre,” he said.
“Management believes that female students are entitled to enjoy the freedom entrenched in our Constitution. They have a legitimate claim to walk peacefully on the streets from their residences to the campus, to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of their surroundings without the fear, apprehension, and insecurity that constantly diminish the quality of their lives.”

He said the CUT are encouraging students who are affected in any way to come forward for assistence.
Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane from the SAPS Communications Department, confirmed that a 29 year old male was arrested by the Family Violence, Child Protenction and Sexual Offences Unit in Mangaung.
According to a report made to police officers at the Bloemspruit Police Station, the 21 year old female victim and her friends visited a local tavern in Bloemside Phase 10. When the tavern closed, they moved to a friend’s house where they partied further into the early hours of Saturday.
The complainant alleges she fell asleep and woke up with a man on top of her. Her friends alleged that they saw him raping her. The suspect was arrested and will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Tuesday (26/07).
