A group of 22 students enrolled at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, were expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 6 March.

This follows their arrest on Monday, during the seemingly endless mayhem relating to the delayed payment of allowance money by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

The disorder had been mounting since Friday, 1 March, and continued until Monday, with disgruntled students closing off the university’s gates with debris and burning rubbish.

The NSFAS has chosen to distribute the initial allowance owed to students through universities. eZaga Holdings was assigned this task.
