A Bloemfontein football team ranked amongst the top eight of the Granda Cup in Cuneo, Italy, this weekend.

The 15 young players of Bloemfontein City FC toured to Europe and took part in this Italian tournament on Saturday (03/06) and Sunday.

Jimmy Augousti, club founder, said the team members outdid themselves by reaching the quarter-finals.

They contended with 28 participating teams from 16 nations, which include France, England, Portugal, Switzerland and Italy.

“Our hearts are bursting with pride,” Augousti told Bloem News on Monday. The team played seven games, of which it won four and lost three.

Augousti was accompanied by David “Rasta” Modise, a South African award-winning football stalwart, as well as Augousti’s son, Marco, who coaches this team.

The tour began on 27 May, stopping briefly in Portugal. The team returned to South Africa on Tuesday.

Augusti said they achieved the unthinkable by assembling a team in only four months to play in an European tournament.
