Swift action leads to arrest of cable theft suspects in Bloemfontein suburb

Four suspects were arrested for tampering with infrastructure after they were caught digging up a cable in Heidedal in Bloemfontein.


Four suspects were arrested for tampering with infrastructure after they were caught digging up a cable in Heidedal in Bloemfontein.

On Wednesday, 8 May, at about 21:00 members of the Bloemfontein Flying Squad followed up on information about suspects stealing cables in an open field in Heidedal.

Members rushed to the scene and upon arrival they asked for a drone belonging to a security company to determine where the suspects were. Four suspects were spotted. Members acted swiftly to close off the area and managed to arrest all four suspects.

Members also recovered shovels, hacksaws, gloves, pliers and other equipment, as well as a 5-meter-long cable that had already been cut. Additionally, it was discovered that approximately 60 meters had already been dug up, and the cable had been removed.

The four suspects, aged between 18 and 33 years old, were arrested and will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court soon.
