In celebration of World Environment Day, the Free State Young Artist Competition’s theme was “Solutions to Plastic Pollution”.
The National Museum announced the winners for this annual competition at the museum on Saturday. There were 42 entrants from ages five to 18 years who created art in a variety of mediums.
The winner in category C, for high school learners, is Suné Fourie (18), a gr. 12 learner at the Hoër Meisieskool Oranje.
In category A, for learners aged five to nine years, the winner is Deandré du Toit (7), a home schooler.
Second is Suné Louw (8), a home schooler; third Olivia Hasenjager (8), a home schooler; and Ethan Cloete (9) of the Fichardtpark Primary School received a merit certificate.
Zoey Su (10) received a first prize in category B, for learners aged ten to 14 years. She is a learner at the Eunice Primary School.
Second in this category was her sister, Athena Su (11), also of Eunice.
In joint third place was Bachumile Sithole (10) of the Roseview Primary School and Geertje Venter (12) of the Missio Dei School.
The winners received cash prizes from the museum.
The guest speaker, Miné Kleynhans, encouraged the young artists to keep on playing and enjoy art.
The art will be on display at the museum until the end of September.
