The captain of the netball team of the University of the Free State (UFS) and some of her teammates are among those in a South African netball squad training in Australia.

Ané Retief, Kovsie captain last year, Refiloe Nketsa and Rolene Streutker were invited to take part in a tour down under.

All three of them represented the UFS on the netball court in 2022.

Two other former Kovsies, Khanyisa Chawane and Boitumelo Mahloko, are also in the touring squad, which is made up of Proteas and players from the President’s XII, to Melbourne.

According to Netball South Africa, the purpose of the tour is to give the remaining group of players, who have not linked up with their international clubs, additional experience and training in a high intensity competition environment.

The South African squad arrived in Australia over the weekend and have already had a court and gym session.

Retief and Streutker played for the South African President’s XII in the Spar Diamond Challenge in Pretoria in 2022 and were invited to train with the Proteas at the end of last year.

Chawane, Nketsa and Mahloko recently played for the Proteas in the Quad Series in Cape Town.
