In a heartwarming initiative aimed at supporting those who have selflessly served their nation, the Veterans Aid Fund (VAF), a non-profit organisation dedicated to assisting former National Servicemen, kicked off its “Veterans in Need” campaign on Monday, 25 September in Bloemfontein.
The Local Gerefomeerde Church Hall in Bloemfontein’s central area and managed by Mariane Cloete, served as the venue for this event.
Veterans from various units, some traveling from nearby towns and institutions, gathered here, many reminiscing about their service days in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
The event began at 10:00 in the packed church hall known as Bloemstad. The atmosphere was set by the beloved military song “Tweejaar,” sung by Philip Moolman. Reverend Kobus Botha shared his military experiences, evoking nostalgic memories from the veterans.
Director Johan de Beer toasted to welcome all veterans.
Quintus Smalman, another director of the VAF, took the stage to deliver an informative session about the organization’s purpose, operations, vision, and mission. He emphasized the importance of donors in making the day’s event and future relief efforts possible, stating that “a country without her soldiers would be like God without his angels”.
The gathering represented veterans from diverse military units, showcasing the strength and resilience of these brave men and women, including paratroopers, infantrymen, artillery, air force, panzer units, administrative corps, engineers, medics, and valiant conscripts from the old South African Army.
Throughout the day, veterans shared their experiences and anecdotes, leading to laughter and touching moments.
Besides being a day of celebration and connection, the event conducted a needs assessment and reached out to veterans in need.
The VAF successfully gathered around 230 veterans, most of whom were veterans in need, ensuring they received the support and care they deserved.
Liz Bouwer, chief financial officer of the VAF, distributed food vouchers of R500 to all veterans in need present, and information was gathered for the Veteran’s Monthly Magazine.
The VAF efforts extended beyond the event, as they encouraged veterans to share their experiences for the magazine ensuring their stories live on for future generations.
The heartfelt gratitude and immense respect for these brave heroes were evident in every smile, handshake, and heartfelt conversation.
